Planning Wedding Drinks in the UK
A UK wedding typically has three distinct drinks moments: the drinks reception (prosecco or Pimm’s while photographs are taken), the wedding breakfast (wine with the meal), and the evening bar (beer, spirits, soft drinks for evening guests). Each stage has different quantities, different formats, and different costs — and it is easy to overbuy on one while running short on another.
The UK has its own drinking conventions that don’t translate from American or European guides. A standard UK wine glass is 125ml (not the 250ml pours sometimes seen in restaurants). A spirit measure is 25ml. A pint is 568ml. Our calculator uses these UK serving sizes throughout, so the bottle counts you get are accurate for UK weddings.
Our Wedding Alcohol Calculator covers all drink types — prosecco, wine (red, white, rosé), beer, spirits, and soft drinks — and lets you configure the exact mix for your wedding. You can set how many guests are drinking, how long the reception lasts, and what proportion of guests prefer each drink type. The calculator shows bottle counts, glasses per guest, and an estimated cost based on UK mid-range prices.
For most UK weddings, a useful rule of thumb is half a bottle of wine per person at the wedding breakfast, plus one glass of prosecco per person for the toast, plus a drinks reception allowance of around 1.5 drinks per person per hour. The calculator lets you fine-tune all of these assumptions based on your specific guest mix and wedding format.
