Wedding Cake Serving Calculator
Work out how many guests your wedding cake will serve — or get a tier recommendation for your guest count. Covers round and square cakes, finger and dessert portions, and the top-tier saving tradition.
How to Use This Calculator
- Choose your mode. Use Recommend a cake to enter your guest count and get a tier suggestion. Use Calculate servings to enter your own tier sizes and find out how many guests they will serve.
- Set shape and portion style. Round and square cakes yield different serving counts from the same diameter. Finger portions are the UK wedding standard — dessert portions are twice as wide and give half as many slices.
- Tick "save the top tier" if applicable. This excludes the smallest tier from the serving total, so the recommendation accounts for it correctly.
- Toggle on "Estimate cost" for a price estimate. Enter your baker's quoted cost per serving — or use the default of £4.50 as a mid-range UK estimate.
UK Wedding Cake Serving Sizes Explained
Wedding cake serving counts depend on three things: the diameter of each tier, whether the cake is round or square, and how you slice it. UK wedding cakes are almost always cut using the industry-standard finger portion method.
Finger portions vs dessert portions
A finger portion is approximately 1 inch wide × 1 inch deep × 4 inches tall. It's the UK standard for wedding cake — deliberately small so guests can taste the cake without filling up, especially if a dessert is being served alongside.
A dessert portion is twice as wide — 2 inches × 1 inch × 4 inches. It produces roughly half as many slices. Use dessert portions if your wedding cake is the only dessert, or if your cake is particularly dense or rich.
Round vs square cakes
Square cakes yield around 25–35% more servings than round cakes of the same size. An 8” square cake gives 32 finger portions vs 24 for an 8” round. This is because square tiers have no curved edges to trim around — every inch of the tier can be cut into neat rectangular slices. If you love the look of a round cake, you can achieve similar serving numbers by going up one tier size.
Servings by tier size — round cake (finger portions)
| Tier diameter | Finger portions | Dessert portions |
|---|---|---|
| 6” | 18 | 9 |
| 8” | 24 | 12 |
| 10” | 38 | 19 |
| 12” | 54 | 27 |
| 14” | 72 | 36 |
Servings by tier size — square cake (finger portions)
| Tier diameter | Finger portions | Dessert portions |
|---|---|---|
| 6” | 24 | 12 |
| 8” | 32 | 16 |
| 10” | 50 | 25 |
| 12” | 72 | 36 |
| 14” | 98 | 49 |

The Top-Tier Tradition: Saving Your Cake for Year One
Saving the top tier of your wedding cake for your first anniversary is a long-standing UK tradition. The couple freezes the smallest tier immediately after the wedding and eats it on their first anniversary — a symbolic connection back to the wedding day.
This tradition works best with traditional fruit cake, which keeps well in the freezer for 12 months and actually improves with age. Sponge cakes, buttercream-filled cakes, and fresh fruit-filled cakes can also be frozen, but the texture may suffer. Talk to your baker before committing — they can advise on the best way to preserve your specific cake.
Practical implication: if you plan to save the top tier, you need to order enough cake for your guests from the remaining tiers. A 3-tier round cake with 10”, 8”, and 6” tiers gives 80 servings in total. If you save the 6” tier (18 servings), you'll have 62 servings for your guests. Tick the “save the top tier” option in the calculator to factor this in automatically.
How Much Does a Wedding Cake Cost in the UK?
Bespoke wedding cakes in the UK typically cost between £350 and £550 for a mid-range 3-tier design in 2026. At roughly £4–£6 per serving, the total scales with your guest count and the complexity of the design.
- Simple naked or semi-naked cake: £3–£4 per serving. No fondant, minimal decoration — just exposed sponge with a light frosting.
- Classic fondant or buttercream: £4–£6 per serving. A full covering with flowers, ribbons, or simple piping. The most common choice at UK weddings.
- Elaborate or luxury design: £7–£15+ per serving. Hand-painted detail, sugar flowers, multiple textures, or premium ingredients (chocolate, salted caramel, exotic flavours).
Note that your cake cost is for the decorated showpiece only. Many couples separately order a plain “kitchen cake” from their caterer to supplement the servings — this is typically much cheaper at £1–2 per serving.

Wedding Cake Tips
- Book your baker 12–18 months ahead. Popular wedding cake makers fill up fast, especially for summer Saturdays. Don't leave the cake until the last minute.
- Get a tasting before you commit. Most bakers offer a tasting session — always take them up on it. Flavour matters as much as appearance.
- Factor in the cake stand and cutting service. Many venues charge a cake-cutting fee (£50–£150) to slice and plate the cake for your guests. Ask before assuming it's included.
- Order for your final headcount, not your estimate. Wedding numbers often change close to the date. Confirm your final guest count with your baker at least 4–6 weeks before the wedding.
- Ask about delivery and set-up logistics. Tiered cakes are fragile in transit. Confirm who delivers, when, and who assembles on the day. For venues with a long drive, check how the cake will travel safely.
- Consider a display cake plus kitchen cake. For large guest counts, a smaller decorative cake for the cutting ceremony paired with a plain kitchen cake is often more cost-effective than a very large showpiece.
Wedding Cake FAQs
How many servings does a 3-tier wedding cake serve?
A classic 3-tier round cake with 10", 8", and 6" tiers serves approximately 80 finger portions or 40 dessert portions. A 3-tier round cake with 12", 10", and 6" tiers serves around 110 finger portions. Square tiers of the same size serve roughly 30–35% more guests than round tiers.
What is the difference between a finger portion and a dessert portion?
A finger portion is a narrow slice approximately 1 inch wide by 1 inch deep by 4 inches tall — the industry standard for wedding cake serving. A dessert portion is twice as wide (2 inches wide), giving you half as many slices from the same cake. Most wedding cakes at UK weddings are served as finger portions, with a small additional dessert served alongside.
Should I save the top tier of my wedding cake for my first anniversary?
Saving the top tier is a traditional UK wedding custom — the couple preserves and freezes the smallest tier to eat on their first anniversary. Fruit cake (the traditional UK wedding cake) keeps well frozen for a year. If you have a sponge, buttercream, or fresh-filled cake, speak to your baker about how to preserve it properly. Our calculator lets you tick 'save the top tier' to exclude those servings from your guest count.
What size tiers should my wedding cake be for 80 guests?
For 80 guests with finger portions, a 3-tier round cake with 10", 8", and 6" tiers gives exactly 80 servings. If you're saving the top tier, you'd need a larger combination — such as 12", 10", and 6" for 110 servings (saving the 6" tier leaves 92 for guests). Square cakes are more efficient: a 10", 8", 6" square cake gives 106 finger portions.
How much does a wedding cake cost in the UK?
A bespoke UK wedding cake typically costs £350–£550 in 2026, with the price rising for intricate sugar work, multiple tiers, or luxury ingredients. Expect to pay roughly £3–£7 per serving depending on design complexity, with an average around £4.50 per serving for a mid-range cake. Simple naked or semi-naked cakes sit at the lower end; elaborate fondant or hand-painted designs at the higher end.
Does a square cake serve more than a round cake?
Yes — a square cake of the same diameter serves approximately 25–35% more guests than a round cake. An 8" square cake gives 32 finger portions compared to 24 for an 8" round. This is because there is less wasted corner-to-edge space when cutting squares. If you love the look of a round cake but need more servings, consider adding an extra tier or going up one size.
What is a kitchen cake?
A kitchen cake (sometimes called a cutting cake) is a plain, unfrosted or simply iced sponge cake prepared by the caterer and kept out of sight in the kitchen. When the decorative wedding cake runs short, the kitchen cake is sliced and served without ceremony. If you have more than 180–200 guests and a standard tier configuration, your baker may recommend having a kitchen cake prepared to ensure everyone gets a slice.
